Beginning in January of 2009 WIC families in New York State began receiving traditional monthly WIC checks to be used exclusively for the purchase of vegetables and fruit from traditional WIC vendors (e.g. grocery stores). New York was the first state in the nation to implement this new feature to the WIC Program. In partnership with the NYS Department of Health, the NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets created the WIC Vegetables and Fruit Check Program (WIC VF), a system to enable farmers to gain authorization to accept these traditional monthly WIC checks for vegetables and fruit at farmers markets.
To become an authorized vendor to accept these traditional WIC vegetables and fruit checks farmers must:
ü Be currently enrolled in the NYS Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). ü Sign a separate WIC VF application and WIC VF agreement. ü Participate in an annual free training program session such as one of the below online webinars.
