2022 Farmers Market Week
August 7 – 13, 2022
Farmers Market Week is an annual celebration for all things farmers markets across the United States. It celebrates local food, the farmers and vendors that make up the markets, farmers market managers who dedicate so much of their life to make markets successful and their customers! It’s an honor that encompasses all facets of what makes farmers markets so vital to all of our communities making them vibrant spaces for community gathering and local commerce.
Each year farmers market week is celebrated during the first full week of August and is acknowledged by local municipalities, state governments as well as the federal government and the entire farmers market community. It’s an opportunity to showcase the great work that farmers markets perform for their communities of farmers and consumers, local businesses and the social fabric of their communities.
You can help celebrate Farmers Market Week too. The Farmers Market Federation of NY has created this toolkit to help you with your own celebrations.
OUR MESSAGE: FARMERS MARKETS ARE INFLATION FIGHTERS
This year we have chosen the theme of FARMERS MARKETS ARE INFLATION FIGHTERS. Many markets have reported that inflation is causing some issues, with some customers reluctant to participate at markets fearing increased costs. They are reducing the amount of driving and find supermarkets that provide one stop shopping. Farmers are having a hard time with the high cost of inputs and the rising fuel costs, making some choose to drop out of farmers markets, and finding alternative marketing venues for their farm products.
But those of us in the farmers market world understand that shopping at farmers markets is a good, healthy, and tasty way to fight inflation. The quality and freshness of the food means it lasts longer once we get it home. The prices also are known to be cheaper than supermarkets when purchasing in season, direct from growers.
We also know that farmers markets are more than just a shopping trip. It’s an experience! Entertainment, education, community gathering, along with great food! That means a farmers market is well worth the drive.
Now it’s time to make sure that consumers throughout our communities understand the value of farmers markets in helping to make ends meet for their families. Join us at the Farmers Market Federation of NY as we celebrate Farmers Market Week this August 7 – 13.
