In 2024, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County in partnership with the Farmers Market Federation of NY ventured to update farmers market benchmark data to provide insight to NYS farmers about best practices for engaging with farmers markets in a post-Covid-19 lockdown world. Previously collected in 2016, the NEW data is in-depth, up-to-date, and engages the perspective of 200+ farmers across NYS who sell at farmers markets! For your use, the data has been built out into a slides, interactive fact/worksheets, and a webinar. Farmers can use these tools to:

  • Assess which and how many farmers markets would be best for their operation, answering questions like, “Is it worth the time to sell my beef products at another market?”

  • Determine what investments in marketing and labor will have the biggest impact on their profitability, answering questions like “Should I hire an extra farmworker to prep for the market?”

  • Evaluate the prices of farm products as compared to alternative similar offerings to remain competitive and well compensated, answering questions like “How much should I sell tomatoes for at the market?”
